“Kai, don’t you understand?” Shia’s voice echoed off the stone walls. She leveled the tip of her blade at his chest. “It’s not about right or wrong! It’s not about what’s allowed. I’m making a choice.”

“The princess can make any choice she wishes, save one that’s deadly to her people,” Kai said. He smiled a faint smile. “You have your responsibility. I have mine.”

“I never asked you to protect me.”

“I’m the captain of your guard.”

“Dammit!” She threw the sword down with a clatter and ran at him, tears in her eyes. “I love you.”
