Anyone Can Be a Dick!
This is a long-standing rule but one easily forgotten: anyone is capable of being awful.
There are some amazing changes taking place in society — changes that are transformative not merely on a surface level, but deeper, changes which are taking place within the “genetic fabric” of our culture. For the first time in history, we’re making huge strides toward equality and respect. The choices people make with regards to who they love, who they live with, and how they wish to be seen in the world, are finally being given the due diligence and respect that they deserve.
At the same time, there’s some serious pushing back against progressive idealism — we’re seeing this reactionary mindset emerging in heightened conservationism and even outright fascism. But, it’s important to remember, this is just reaction to the strides being taken. If we can move passed this initial period of tension, I believe that we have a bright future ahead of us. A future that considers civic responsibility (the responsibility of all members of a society to care for all other members) one fundamental to having a society at all. Increased awareness of, and consideration of, universal healthcare, universal basic income — among other plans for social cohesion — are also signs of the change in our prevailing mindset.
