Darkness Is a Deed

“If I live,” he whispered, “darkness will swallow the world.”

There were two sunsets in the sky when Valero Mal finally caught the boy at the edge of town.

“Little fool,” Valero said. “Seven more minutes and there would have been a century of night.”

“Night doesn’t sound so bad if you get to live to see it.”

“Sometimes you’ve got to make sacrifices.” Valero drew his saber and raised it high. “Last words?”

“Duck.”

Valero crumpled as a rock struck his head.

The boy’s mother stood there.

“If I live,” he whispered, “darkness will swallow the world.”

“If I let him kill you,” she said, “darkness will swallow me.”
