I think that people fail to realize, too, that there are ways that owning a car and relying on it limits freedoms as well! From the obvious financial weight, to the entire design of city/suburban living and walking spaces. We don't design for good communities, we design for cars - and since all of our designs for car-based infrastructure kinda suck, life in cities and suburbs ends up wearing thin.
Dedicated bike lanes, the adoption of comfortable European styles of pedal assisted e-bikes, and renewed mass transit... these would make life for millions of Americans so much easier and healthier.
