Thanks for the suggestion, that's something I'll put on my research list for a future article! I'm very leery of Google's practices on number of levels, but I'll be curious to see the specifics of how their recycling program works.

One of the things that's always bothered me about the Chromebook is that Google defuncts them after a very short period of time, dropping them from security and other updates, even when the Chromebook might otherwise happily continue being used. They're not alone in this, other tablet and phone makers do the same, of course, but that's always felt environmentally irresponsible to me.

That said, I owned a great Acer Chromebook for a while (before passing it on to a family member) and really enjoyed it. If it'd been designed with real longevity in mind, I would have put a custom OS, or just Linux, on it and might have still been using it today. Sadly, the proprietary hardware made that impossible.
