There's something delightful in a spoof that spoofs with love. If it were made today, it would likely be mean-spirited and irreverent - somehow, it manages to make a great deal of fun while inviting fans into the joke. I feel that this is partly because it maintains internal reality. Because it's not trying to drop into wry meta humor that breaks the fourth wall between the characters and the audience, it allows the viewer to engage with it on a different level. Can't even count how many times I've seen it now, so much fun.
